Not sure which slot width fits your night-light? Print three small base tests instead of an entire lithophane. Each test is labeled with its slot width.

Have calipers? Measure the housing thickness and use that as the center value. No calipers? Start with the three-size Fit Finder.

Spacing between tests

Coupons use the same rounded slot, 5 mm entry lips, 17 mm depth, and 3.25 mm adapter thickness as the current Studio model. The Fit Finder tests slot width; you still need to check slot depth and the other dimensions of your housing.

How to test

After printing, let all three pieces cool completely. With the night-light unplugged, try each size. The best fit should slide on without forcing and should not wobble.

  1. Slice and print the three small coupons flat on the bed.
  2. Let them cool completely.
  3. Unplug the night light before checking the fit.
  4. Try the center coupon first (16.5 mm by default).
  5. Choose a snug fit that slides on without force, wobble, cracking, or stress.
  6. Uncheck sizes you already printed, or use the best labeled size in Studio and download the full model.
  • All too tight: increase the center value and print another set.
  • All too loose: decrease the center value and print another set.
  • Almost right: use 0.25 mm spacing around the closest size.

Learn about tolerance

Printers and materials do not reproduce dimensions perfectly. Testing nearby sizes teaches tolerance: the difference between the intended measurement and the fit produced by a real printer and material.

A smaller number makes a tighter slot. A larger number adds clearance. Never force a test piece onto the housing. Test only while the night-light is unplugged, let pieces cool, never modify electrical components, and follow the light and printer manufacturers’ instructions. Young makers follow their family’s or educator’s guidance.
